Report on games

Woodbridge 13. Fakenham 3

Fakenham produced a much improved performance than last week and pressed the game from the early stages keeping Woodbridge contained for most of the first half in their own territory. Fakenham went close to opening the scoring on four separate occasions with near misses from Williamson, Day, Lockston and Sperring. Woodbridge opened the scoring, in a rare attack into Fakenham’s half with a drop goal. They further increased their lead with an unconverted try after three or four missed tackles. Fakenham rallied and again applied the pressure which resulted in a penalty slotted over by S.Baldock. The game opened up with both teams attacking but with no further scores. At half time the S.Baldock and coach B. Swift rallied the Fakenham team for a second half push. The pressure was applied with further opportunities missed due to an errant pass or knock on or failure to clear a ruck quickly enough. Warren, O’dell, Richardson and Starman tried to force their way over the line without any reward. Woodbridge look dangerous on the counter attack down the right wing with some great inter passing but Fakenham‘s defence protected the line. Eventually Woodbridge found an extra support player and the last ditch attempted tackle was not enough to stop the fullback breaching Fakenham’s try line. The last 5 minutes found Fakenham camped in the Woodbridge’s 22 meters area. Fakenham player where frustrated by opposition player killing or delaying the release from a ruck took the law into their own hands which resulted in a yellow card for the Fakenham hooker. Fakenham did have a chance for another penalty but it slid agonisingly to the left of the posts. The game was over and all the players can be proud of their performances

Fakenham 25 v Cantabrigians 36

In what promised to be an evenly matched game, on a blustery afternoon, Cantabs opened the scoring after an exciting 15 minute spell that saw both teams camped out on the halfway line. Neither side wanted to give an inch, Fakenham playing particularly powerful rugby, succeeded in turning over the ball twice. When Fakenham seemed to have the run of play Cantabs forced an error, passed the ball wide and crashed through the defence. This first try was duly converted and it became Fakenhams turn to score from a penalty. The score see-sawed back and forth with Fakenham soaking up the pressure after captain Stuart Baldock was sin-binned for an infringement. The whistle blew for half-time with the scoreboard perfectly level at 13 apiece.

The second half saw Fakenham again chasing the Cantabs, the Golden Boot of Baldock keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Mark Allen, hacked and kicked the ball forward to catch it beautifully at full pace, touched down under the posts bringing Fakenham back in front. Unsurprisingly Cantabs surged back in front again and with patience running thin Bob Sayer ran in unopposed to bring the scoreline close together again. Baldock bounced a penalty off the bar and from that point our luck seemed to change as in the last 5 minutes Cantabs stretched their lead and after a couple of injuries and nasty knocks Fakenham were unable to answer.
