Fakenham managed to shake off the slow starts that have been present in recent games and tore into Dereham with intensity and organisation. A try came almost immediately as Fakenham’s pace created gaps in a Dereham team that could just not keep up and Tom Bane-Young scored under the posts and then duly converted his own try. That was the story for the next 30 minutes as Fakenham maintained their game plan and discipline to score try after try, Josh Gee scoring in the 11th, 20th and 22 minute, George Ready in the 17th and 25th. Fakenham got the second half of their league season underway with a home fixture against Norwich Union on Saturday, their first league fixture of 2017. The Xmas and New Year break had given time for knocks and bangs to heal but the question was, had it taken the edge off the Fakenham challenge? The answer was an immediately obvious and resounding no as a charge down by the home side’s scrum half Harry Richardson provided the first try of the game within the first couple of minutes and this was converted by the ever-reliable Tom Bane-Young, 7-0. Fakenham arrived for this opening game of the league 2nd half determined to continue moving forwards from the die first half performance of the cup game against Swaffham. The team was still looking unusual as a combination of injury and the early start meant a number of regular players were not available but they started positively but they just couldn’t quite get the phases together that they wanted due to the aggressive play of Broadlands in the rucks.
