Banham Cup Victory

Sat April 26th 08
With the weather finally turning into something resembling spring, it was our turn to host the Banham Cup. Holt turned out 3 teams in the hope of retaining the cup, but it was not to be.
130 guests sat down for lunch, provided by The Bull, and then spilled out of the marquee to join the 100 or so spectators in glorious sunshine cheering on both first teams.
1st XV v Holt 27-19
The pitch was in magnificent condition, considering 2 games had already been played on it beforehand, and the pace of Shaun Dawson on the wing was electric. Though Fakenham struggled in the set pieces at times, loose ball and great defensive work combined with disruptive play of Jonno Strong to keep them in the game. The scoreline seesawed back and forth until the last 10 minutes of the game which saw Mark Allen catch his own "up & under" to go over in the corner. He did the same again only moments later, a move which looked like it had been read by 2 of the opposition until they ran into each other while attempting to catch the high ball, which spilt the ball and Allen scored again.
2nd XV v Holt 7-47
Seeing as I was eating my lunch at this point of the day I was unable to watch most of this game. However, I am told that our mixture of new players, experienced hands and several freshly rehabilitated squad members were unlucky to lose by such a margin in a game that was closer than the scoreline suggests.
3rd XV v Holt 59-5
The first game of the day was perhaps the most fiercely contested, with many old hands on both sides determined to set the standard for the day. Several new young Fakenham lads were able to watch a well-oiled, versatile machine in action and were rewarded with a huge win. Holt were unable to score again as the pack rampaged all over the park and demoralised the visitors into making too many mistakes.
The celebrations continued late into the night, and a few die-hards were swept off the streets of the town in the morning, or crawled out from under the bushes that had been their bed for the night.
Can't wait until next year!

Online newsletter launched

Our occasional newsletter 'Over the Bar' has gone 21st century. If your email address is on our database a copy of the latest edition will arrive in your inbox anytime (if it hasn't already done so). If you don't get a copy its because we don't have your address.

The newsletter has been launched in response to Lee Mustons review of the club carried out last year. One of the outcomes was that members felt that more effort needed to be made regarding internal and external communication. The newsletter is our latest effort to address this weakness. Let us know what you think ('Contact Us')

Paper copies of 'Over the Bar' will continue to be produced for a little while longer during the playing season. To subscribe simply complete and send the form via the following link:
