After a weeks layoff as a result of late drawing of Cup fixtures, Fakenham entertained West Norfolk second team last weekend in this EC2 North league game following a substantial win against Norwich’s second team in the previous round of league fixtures. West Norfolk were an unknown quantity, sometimes fielding a strong side and other times cancelling fixtures so form was to be no guide. Fakenham started the stronger when Ian Williamson crossed the line to score a try in the opening minutes for the home side with the extra points added by Tom Bane-Young. 7-0. West Norfolk responded quickly though after Fakenham were penalised three times in a row allowing the visitors to press forwards and score an unconverted try 7-5. Fakenham dominance soon reasserted itself though
, a great backs handling move produced a superb try for George Ready, again converted by Tom Bane-Young 12-5. Fakenham were soon on the attack again and a deft chip kick and regather by Tom B-Y allowed him to draw the last defender in and feed Ian Williamson a simple pass to score his second try which was again converted to take the score to 19-5. Ian Williamson at this point seemed to decide that it was going to be his day as he scored his third try of the first half of the game which was once again converted by Tom B-Y to take the score to 26-5 and secure the 4 try bonus point. After another good series of phases involving forwards and backs Howard Kellick scored a try and Tom B-Y was accurate with the kick to move the score on to 33-5 at half time.
After the restart Fakenham started the second half as they had finished the first; after a great break down the right wing by Luke Taylor a well-timed off load to joint man of the match Ashley Stewart allowed him to score wide out on the right wing but the kick was unfortunately missed 38-5. West Norfolk somehow got themselves together and forced their way back into the game with a try and a conversion to take the score to 38-12 but the remainder off the second half saw Fakenham score 4 more tries, one to Lloyd Marshall, joint man of the match Ian Williamson added 2 to take his game tally to 5 and Tom B-Y scored Fakenham’s last try with Lloyd Marshall adding 3 conversions to make a total of 64 points. West Norfolk added a third try to take their final tally to 17. The Fakenham forwards played well throughout and controlled the scrummage and many of the rucks and mauls, and together with the backs defended against the majority of the West Norfolk attacks, all in all a very competent all round display by Fakenham who managed to keep their discipline going even though it was sorely tested at times.
Next week will see Fakenham first team travel to North Walsham second team for the penultimate league game this season and a win would set up a grandstand finish against Diss seconds for the final game of the division. The second team have two home games in a row dependant on availability; all kick offs are now at 3:00pm.
