Last Saturday saw  Fakenham 1st travel south to Diss to take on their 2nd XV.  The match started brightly for Fakenham with high intensity in the game play moving them up the field quickly.  The first score came within 5 minutes of the kickoff.  Fakenham reversed the direction of attack and Joe Bane-Young fed debutant flanker Rob Ward.  Ward initially juggled the catch, but once he had the ball secure, he broke a tackle and found himself with a 20 metre sprint to the line for the touchdown.

Fakenham kept up the pressure on Diss and it wasn’t long before the second score came.  Following a lineout, Fakenham ran a couple of phases with the forwards taking the play into the centre of the field.  With Diss’s defence drawn in, the space opened up back to the left.  Joe Bane-Young was again involved, this time giving the pass to Number 8 Howard Kellock who had an untouched 10 meter run to the line.

Diss were needing to get some momentum goinig in rder to establish a foothold in the game but again it was Fakenham who scored next.  Diss were trying to use their big forwards to set some phases together and work their way out of their own 22 but the ball was dislodged in a tackle and spilled out the side.  Howard Kellock was the first to react and scooping up the ball he headed for the line.  A simple pass was given and winger Brett Stolworthy was able to coast over the line.  This try was then converted by Lloyd Marshall.

With Fakenham leading by 17 points to nil Diss started to become

more competitive and were the next team to get on the score sheet.  From the back of the scrum the Diss Number 8 made a strong run, brushing off a couple of tackles and making good ground.  Now on the front foot, Diss were able to put several phases together before moving the ball out wide to the left wing who crossed the line for their first points of the day.  Going into half time the score was Diss 5 Fakenham 17.

Fakenham were dominant in their line-out play for the entire game and employed it often.  Early in the second half they kicked for a line-out 5 meters from the Diss try line from which they built a strong maul and surged forwards.  Callum Frost was in control of the ball and put in the final shove to score the touch down which was subsequently converted by Lloyd Marshall.  Diss were not to be outdone and over the next twenty minutes put considerable pressure on Fakenham.  Diss managed to get a score out of this period of pressure turning broken play to their advantage, quickly spreading it wide to allow the right wing space to score in the corner.

Fakenham’s final try came from left wing Luke Taylor.  A strong running line took him from the Fakenham half through the Diss line to a 2 on 1 with the Diss full back who was sold on the giving Taylor a clear run for the final 25 meters.  This took the score to 29 - 10 in favour of Fakenham which is how it finished, maintaining Fakenhams run of bonus point wins.

Next Saturday the 1st and 2nd teams are both playing at Swaffham, 2:00pm
