Norwich Union 2nds 13 Fakenham 2nds 34

Fakenham’s 1st XV game had been forfeited by Beccles this weekend leaving only the 2nd team fixture against Dereham who unfortunately called off at short notice and some hasty phoning round found a replacement in Norwich Union to allow their teams to have their first proper workout in weeks after a series of opposition cancelled games. Fakenham got off to a promising with some great attacks but ultimately failed to score, in response Norwich union put the Fakenham defence to the test but it held firm. Fakenham again pressed forward and this time they were rewarded with a try from captain Craig White but

unfortunately the conversion missed the target 0-5. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end of the pitch with both teams coming close to scoring but knock on’s and forward passes meant the attacks were halted. Fakenham were frustrated as their pace was superior to Union but 16 minutes after their first score George Ready was to break a number of tackles and score under the posts and Jonathan Kettell secured the conversion to make the score 0-12. Fakenham’s third try came from a great backs handling move to put Adam Steele over in the right wing position, a difficult conversion kick was missed, 0-17. The home side regrouped and again pressed hard to get some reward for their efforts in the first half, when Fakenham transgressed at a breakdown Union opted to take the kick from the resulting penalty and this was successful leaving the score at half time 3-17.

Fakenham took charge at the start of the second half and they made Union chase their elusive backs all around the park and after 12 minutes the breakthrough was made wide on the right, not by a back but in the shape of second row Adam Lingwood who showed great pace and strength to score the unconverted try, 3-22. Union shocked by the score pressed hard again but it took them 8 minutes to get back on the scoreboard with an unconverted try to take the score to 8-22. In quick response Fakenham’s backs handled well and broke out from their own 22 metre and passed to debutant (and man of the match) Shaun Whitesides who dodged and weaved on the left wing before finally turning on his afterburners to leave the Union defence in his wake to score a brilliant individual try and the conversion was good 8-29. The next Fakenham player to add their name yo the scoreboard was Jonathan Kettlell who scored under the post with a 50 metre run but in a rush to take kick Ashley Stewart missed the conversion 8-34.  The home side still wanted to get back into the game and attacked through their forwards as they were determined to make the ground to launch attacks from inside the visitors half. Union moved the ball wide and although Fakenham defended admirably the home team would not be denied and scored a try wide on the right but it was unconverted taking the score to 13-34. The time had run out and the final whistle blew to bring to an end to a fascinating contest and a good work out for both teams.

Both Fakenham sides are in action in the cup competitions next week, the first team will play Watton away in the Norfolk plate and Fakenham seconds will travel to Wymondham seconds in the second team cup. Due to it being February the kick off time should change to 2:30pm but as it is a cup game it may stay at 2pm so keep an eye on the club website for confirmation (or turn up for 2:00pm to be on the safe side).
