A last minute defeat for the 2nd's
With no League action for the First Team at the weekend, Fakenham 2nd played Thetford 2nd in a very close, friendly Woodfordes Merit Table 3 encounter where 14 of the games 17 points where scored in the last five minutes.
Thetford had the better of the initial opening and scored a penalty early on in the first half with their scrum looking functional and their backs fairly lively. Although Fakenham had the majority of possession most of it was unfortunately in their own half and they struggled to break through some impressive defensive work by Thetford into the oppositions territory leaving the game finely balanced, at 3 nil, in the visitors favour at half time.
After the restart the home side again had most of the possession
but this time it was, thankfully, in the Thetford half of the field. Powerful runs from Simon Bygrave, Aaron Poyser and Jack Lowin-Green continued to test the away teams defence. Fakenham was now dominating scrummages, with the power coming especially from the two Craigs, Prior and White. After intense pressure Fakenham were rewarded with a penalty try for continuous infringements by the desperate Thetford defence. Tom Silver duly put the conversion over the bar with the clock indicating five minutes remaining. From the restart a catalogue of errors from the tired Fakenham team saw Thetford gain possession and inch closer and closer to the Fakenham line. As the clock turned red there was just time for one more attack that resulted in a mismatch between the away teams winger, in space, and two exhausted home forwards, the winger winning and scoring in the corner. The conversion was duly made and the final whistle blown leaving Thetford winners by 10 points to Fakenham's 7. Credit should be given to both sides as the players absolutely gave their all and certainly earned a pint or two of shandy in the Clubhouse afterwards.
Next Saturday the Fakenham 1st XV are at home in an Eastern Counties 2 clash with Hadleigh, start 2pm, whilst the seconds are away to Wymondham 3rd XV, also a 2pm start. Last weekends U16 game against Broadland was unfortunately called off by the opposition so their next outing is on Sunday at home against Spalding, starting at 11:00am and spectators are as usual welcome at all of these games.
